Bad Luck Gone, Hayden’s Put On a Show!
The bad luck fairy finally decided to start picking on someone else and left the Hayden’s alone this weekend, and all 3 scored top-10 finishes on Saturday at Auto City.
Eariler in the week Kyle and the family towed the Auto Pride Collision/Duke’s Car Stereo Monte Carlo out to Auto Pride Collision in Grand Blanc for Larry Loynes “Race Talk” on 1470 AM. Everyone in attendance had a great time, even though the skies opened up and rained toward the end!
On Friday we went on another road trip, this time to Bear Lake Camp in Lapeer. The reason was that Kyle was asked to show the car at this camp, which is put on by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. While at the camp, the kids were able to sit in the car, put on his firesuit and helmet, and take pictures with Kyle and the car. The kids, and for that matter adults, definitely enjoyed the visit and so did the Hayden Gang. A big thanks goes out to the MDA for making this possible!!
Well, when Kyle and Kenny got home, they got bored and decided to go racing!! The loaded up the tools and went up to Dixie Motor Speedway in Birch Run. “Fast” Eddie was in attendance and the Hayden’s showed their strength at Dixie, qualifying 1st and 2nd, with Eddie setting fast time. They both started in the back of the heat race, but Kyle was able to pick his way through the field and was right on Mike Walther’s back bumper as the checkers fell. In the 20-lap feature, Kyle and Eddie rolled off 8th and 9th respectively. The bottom line immediately moved and Kyle had to fall into line behind Jim Miller, Mike Walther, Eddie and Dan Engel. After a restart, Kyle immediately made his move and went to the high side of the track. He picked off Engel, Eddie and was almost pst Walther when a lap car was running well off the pace in the racing groove, right in front of Kyle. He had to take evasive action to keep from hitting the car, and fell all the way back to 5th. Eddie however was right on Walther’s back bumper and when Mike made the pass for the lead Eddie followed him through. Kyle was able to make a move and get behind Eddie, and the 3 were on the bottom line. Kyle and Eddie ran out of time, however, and Mike Walther took his 2nd straight victory, with Eddie and Kyle chasing him across the stripe.
On Saturday, Eddie and Kyle were joined at Auto City by Curtis and the #23 Camaro. Kyle qualified in the 4th spot, Eddie 7th, and Curtis 13th. A low invert put Eddie on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap feature and Kyle in the 2nd row right behind him. After crash on the first start, Eddie and Kyle filed in to line in 2nd and 3rd. Robby Johnston meanwhile was on a tear and blazed through the field to take the lead just after halfway. Eddie and Kyle had quite a battle for the 3rd spot, trading quite a bit of paint. With 5 laps to go Kyle finally made the pass for the 3rd spot, while Eddie’s car was fading quickly. Kyle was able to bring it home 3rd, and Eddie 5th. Curtis played the survival game and made a few passes to bring the car home 9th, taking his 1st top-10. That put 3 Hayden’s in the top-9!!
As July begins, Kyle sits 3rd in the point standings at both Auto City and Dixie, which is fairly amazing considering he missed 2 races at Dixie and has a DNF in another!! The next 2-3 weeks will determine if he still has a shot to win a championship at either track.
“Fast” Eddie is starting to make that Camaro work and is now a serious threat to take a feature. Remember, with a feature win that would put Eddie in the prestigious club to take features in 4 different decades.
Curtis is also becoming more comfortable behing the wheel and you can expect him to knock down more and more top-10 finishes as the season progresses.
We know it has been reported for 2 straight weeks that Johnny will be racing “this coming Saturday.” A few unforseen problems prevented that the last 2 weekends, but barring any more set-backs Johnny plans on having the #64 Monte Carlo in action this weekend. He is definitely itching to get behind the wheel!!
See ya at the track!
